Understanding Houston Boardgame Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride is a railway-themed Houston boardgame designed by Alan R. Moon. The game is known for its simple rules, strategic play, and social interaction. Players collect train cards that enable them to claim railway routes on a map. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come from fulfilling Destination Tickets – goal cards that connect distant cities; and by building the longest continuous railway.

Game Components

Ticket to Ride includes:

  • A board map of North American train routes (or other regions, depending on the edition)
  • 225 colored train cars
  • 144 Illustrated cards (including Destination Tickets and Train Car cards)
  • 5 Wooden Scoring Markers
  • 1 Rulebook

Game Setup

  • Board Setup: Place the board in the center of the table.
  • Train Cars: Each player selects a color and takes a set of 45 matching train cars and a scoring marker.
  • Shuffle and Deal Cards: Shuffle the train car cards and deal four to each player. Place the remaining deck next to the board and reveal five cards face up next to it.
  • Destination Tickets: Shuffle the destination ticket cards and deal three to each player. Players must keep at least two but can opt to keep all three.

Tips for Beginners

  1. Plan Your Routes: Look at your destination tickets and plan a route that covers as many tickets as possible.
  2. Adapt Your Strategy: Be flexible and ready to change your routes if an opponent blocks your path.
  3. Balance Risk and Reward: Longer routes score more points but are riskier. Weigh the benefits against the potential setbacks.
